Richard spent more than 25 years in retail — the last decade of it designing training programmes — before retraining as a driving instructor. That background shows: every lesson is structured, purposeful and built around how you actually learn.

He teaches a client-centred approach: you agree the goals of each lesson together, and you're never pushed faster than you're comfortable with. Defensive driving and hazard recognition are woven into everything, not bolted on at the end.

Richard is also the author of Psychology of Driving — our guide to the root causes of young driver accidents — which he uses to help learners understand not just how to drive, butwhy drivers crash.

Off the road, you may recognise his voice from seven years on local radio presenting the Saturday evening show on HFM. He also owns an Austin Healey 3000, and firmly believes summer exists for driving with the hood down (his holidays of choice: Tenerife and Siam Park).
